Fetus in fetu: A rare presentation

چکیده
A 17-month-old male child was brought to our department by his parents when they noticed a lump in the lower abdomen for last 3 days. Abdominal ultrasonography (US) revealed a large, hyperechoic, and heterogeneous mass, measuring about 56 mm × 34 mm × 48 mm, in the lower abdomen. Then, CT scan was performed to verify a large, complex, soft-tissue mass with bony elements [Figure 1]. At laparotomy, a well-encapsulated retroperitoneal mass was found. Then, in toto excision of the mass was performed. On microscopic evaluation, well-developed vertebral and extremity bones plus differentiated connective and fat tissues were revealed. Based on the histopathology, a final diagnosis of fetus in fetu was confirmed.

Fetus in Fetu: A Rare Case Report and its Embryo-Pathogenesis
Fetus- in- fetu (FIF), is a rare congenital anomaly that occurs due to malformed fetus growing inside the twin. It occurs due to the aberration in the diamniotic monochorionic monozygotic twinning with unequal division of inner cell mass of blastocyst leading to inclusion of small cell mass inside the developing sister fetus. The most common presentation will be with intra-abdominal mass locat...

BACKGROUND Fetus in fetu is a rare congenital anomaly and is defined as a monozygotic twin incorporated into the abdomen of its sibling during development. Fetus in fetu is often overlooked in the differential diagnosis of an abdominal mass. Unlike teratomas, fetus in fetu is a benign disorder. CASE PRESENTATION We describe the clinical characteristics of two patients, a thirty-months old boy...

INTRODUCTION Fetus-in-fetu is an extremely rare condition in which a malformed fetus is found in the body of its twin. To our knowledge, fewer than 100 cases have been reported. Wide variations of presentation have been described, although its embryo-pathogenesis and differentiation from a teratoma have not been well established. CLINICAL PICTURE We describe a male neonate with a fetoid-like ...

متن کاملTwin fetus in fetu in a child: a case report and review of the literature
INTRODUCTION Fetus in fetu is an extremely rare condition wherein a malformed fetus is found in the abdomen of its twin. This entity is differentiated from teratoma by its embryological origin, its unusual location in the retroperitoneal space, and the presence of vertebral organization with limb buds and well-developed organ systems. The literature cites less than 100 cases worldwide of twin f...

BACKGROUND Fetus in fetu is a rare congenital anomaly in which malformed fetus grows within the body of its twin. It is almost always detected as an abdominal mass in infancy. It is a parasitic twin of a diamniotic, monozygotic twin. It should be differentiated from teratoma which has no axial arrangement and has got definite malignant potential. Herein, we present a case of a two-month old fem...
